    To become an RBT®, you must:

  • Does completing the 40-hour training make me an RBT?

    No, completing the 40-hour training is just one of the steps towards becoming an RBT. You must also complete the Initial Competency Assessment, pass a background check, and then pass the RBT exam conducted by the BACB.

  • What happens after I complete the 40-hour RBT course?

    After completing the 40-hour training, you must identify a BCBA who can conduct your Initial Competency Assessment. Once you pass the assessment, you can apply to take the RBT certification exam.

  • What should I do if I don’t feel prepared for the BACB RBT exam?

    If you’re not confident about taking the RBT exam, you can seek additional preparation or study resources. Some training providers offer a money-back guarantee if you feel inadequately prepared after completing their training and fail the exam.

  • What is the RBT Initial Competency Assessment, and when should it be completed?

    The RBT Initial Competency Assessment is a practical evaluation where a BCBA observes and assesses your ability to perform the tasks listed in the RBT Task List. It must be completed after the 40-hour training and within 90 days before submitting your RBT certification application.

  • I don’t have a client, how can I do the RBT Competency Assessment without one?

    If you do not have a client to conduct the RBT Competency Assessment with, you can reach out to your supervisor or training organization for guidance. They may be able to provide simulated scenarios or role-playing opportunities to assess your competency in a controlled setting. Additionally, you can utilize online resources that offer practice scenarios and quizzes to sharpen your skills in the absence of a client. Remember, ongoing training and practice are essential for maintaining your RBT certification.

  • Who can conduct an RBT Initial Competency Assessment?

    A BCBA, BCaBA, or someone under the supervision of a BCBA/BCaBA who meets the BACB’s assessor qualifications can conduct the assessment. Starting January 1, 2024, the responsible assessor, assistant assessor(s), and the RBT applicant must be employed at (or have a contractual relationship with) the organization offering the assessment.

  • What if I fail the RBT certification exam?

    You may retake the RBT exam up to a maximum of 8 times within a 12-month period. If you do not pass after 8 attempts, you must wait until the 12-month authorization period ends before reapplying.

RBT Supervision and Employment

  • Who can supervise an RBT?

    An RBT must be supervised by a BCBA, BCaBA, or a licensed professional in a behavioral health field with applied behavior analysis within their legislative scope of practice. The supervisor must meet the BACB’s supervision requirements and have completed the necessary training.

  • What are the supervision requirements for an RBT?

    RBTs must receive ongoing supervision equivalent to at least 5% of the hours spent providing behavior-analytic services each month. This supervision must include at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts per month, with one observation session.

  • Can an RBT work as an independent contractor in the U.S.?

    According to the BACB and IRS guidelines, RBTs generally do not qualify as independent contractors because they must practice under the close, ongoing supervision of a BCBA, BCaBA, or FL-CBA.

RBT - Maintaining Your Certification

  • How often do I need to renew my RBT certification?

    RBT certification must be renewed annually. The renewal requires completing an RBT Renewal Competency Assessment and submitting it with your renewal application, along with the appropriate fees.

  • What happens if I miss my RBT certification renewal date?

    f you miss your renewal date, your certification will become inactive. You have 30 days to complete the renewal requirements, including paying a late fee, or your certification will expire, and you will need to reapply for certification.

  • Can I take a break from maintaining my RBT certification?

    Yes, you can apply for voluntary inactive status if you need to pause your certification maintenance for up to two years. During this period, you cannot practice as an RBT.

  • What documentation is required to prove I am meeting supervision requirements?

    You and your RBT supervisor must maintain records of the days and times you delivered behavior-analytic services, dates and durations of supervision, formats of supervision (e.g., individual or group), and the name(s) of supervisors. All documentation must be retained for at least 7 years.

  • How long is the RBT training?

    The RBT training is a minimum of 40 hours long and can be completed at your own pace. It’s delivered online and must be completed within 180 days of starting.

RBT® Supervision Agreement

  • What is the purpose of this agreement?

    This agreement provides a temporary supervision-only relationship to support you in obtaining your Florida Medicaid or Medicare provider number. It does not create an employment or contractor relationship and does not authorize you to bill or perform clinical services until formally credentialed and hired.

  • How long does the agreement last?

    The term of the agreement is 60 days from the date signed unless expressly extended in writing. However, the agreement will automatically end earlier if you are approved for a Medicaid or Medicare provider number.

  • What happens if I get approved by Medicaid or Medicare during the supervision period?

    If you receive credentialing approval during the supervision period, the agreement terminates automatically on the date of approval. You must notify MD Analytics in writing within 48 hours of approval (email is acceptable), and attach a copy of the official documentation.

  • What if I don’t notify MD Analytics after I’ve been approved?

    Failure to notify the company of your credentialing approval within 48 hours will result in a $250 administrative penalty, which is still enforceable even after the agreement ends.

  • If I get approved in the first month, do I still have to pay for the second month?

    Yes—if you do not notify the company on time and your approval occurred during your first month, the second-month payment will still be due. No refunds are provided regardless of when approval occurs if notification is not timely.

  • Can I get a refund if I’m approved early or decide to stop supervision?

    No. All payments made under this agreement are non-refundable, even if the agreement ends early due to credentialing approval or if you withdraw. There are no partial or pro-rated refunds.

  • What kind of activities can I do under this agreement?

    You may participate in non-billable, non-clinical supervision-related activities only, such as observing clinical sessions, participating in compliance training, preparing enrollment documents, and attending supervision or progress meetings. You may not provide client services, bill for your time, or complete clinical documentation.

  • Am I allowed to work or earn wages during this period?

    No. This agreement does not create an employment or contractor relationship. You are not being hired or paid by MD Analytics, and you must not provide any compensable services unless you’re formally credentialed, linked to the group Medicaid number, and onboarded as an employee or contractor.

  • What if I don’t get credentialed in the 60-day period?

    If your application is denied or still pending after 60 days, the company may remove you from the supervision roster and terminate the agreement. If you need more time, you must request an extension in writing before your supervision period ends.

  • Can I extend my supervision if needed?

    Yes, extensions may be available by mutual agreement. You will be required to sign an Extension Addendum and pay for the additional supervision period. You must request an extension before your current agreement expires.

  • Can I rejoin supervision later if I need to?

    Yes, but you must notify MD Analytics in writing (email is acceptable) at least ten (10) days before your agreement is set to expire. Reenrollment is not guaranteed and will depend on available capacity.

  • What happens if I don’t pay on time?

    Payment is due by the 5th of each month. Late payments are subject to a $25 fee or 20% of the amount due (whichever is greater). Continued non-payment may result in immediate termination of supervision services.

  • What if I violate ethical or supervision policies?

    Any misconduct, unethical behavior, or failure to follow Medicaid or BACB® policies may result in immediate termination, and MD Analytics may report your actions to the BACB or Medicaid. You are also fully responsible for any harm, billing issues, or violations you cause.

  • Am I covered by liability insurance?

    You are required to maintain your own professional liability insurance throughout the supervision period. Proof of coverage must be provided upon request.

  • Who do I contact if I have questions or need to report my credentialing approval?

    You should notify MD Analytics by email or certified mail using the contact information listed in the agreement. Email is acceptable for reporting your Medicaid/Medicare approval or requesting supervision extensions.

  • Do I need a BACB account before taking the Competency Assessment?

  • Can I take this assessment if I haven’t finished my 40-hour RBT training?

    No, to take the Initial Assessment for RBT certification, you must have completed the 40-hour RBT training requirement. It is important to finish the training as it provides the necessary knowledge and skills to pass the assessment successfully. Be sure to complete the training before attempting the assessment to ensure you are adequately prepared.

  • Is your assessment accepted by the BACB?

  • What is the RBT Initial Competency Assessment and how does it differ from the certification exam?

    The Initial Competency Assessment (ICA) is a practical, skills-based evaluation in which a qualified RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator (typically a BCBA, BCBA-D, or authorized BCaBA) observes you performing a minimum of 20 specific ABA tasks.

    Unlike the official BACB certification exam , which is a timed, multiple-choice test taken either at a Pearson VUE testing center or via remote proctoring; the ICA confirms that you can actually apply ABA skills in real time through direct observation, role-play, or verbal demonstration. 

  • Do I need to pass the Initial Competency Assessment before taking the official RBT certification exam?

    Yes. You cannot submit your application to the BACB for the official RBT exam until your RBT Requirements Coordinator (typically a BCBA or BCBA-D) has signed off on your completed Competency Assessment. This is a mandatory prerequisite. Additionally, the completed Competency Assessment must be dated no more than 90 days before you submit your BACB application, so be mindful of timing. 

  • Am I eligible to take the Initial Competency Assessment right after completing my 40-hour course?

    Yes. Once you have completed your 40-hour training course, you are eligible to begin your Initial Competency Assessment . It is recommended to schedule it while the material is still fresh.     The assessor determines the most appropriate method for each task item, and all three methods must be utilized across the full assessment per BACB guidelines.

  • Will the assessment test both theoretical knowledge and practical skills?

    Yes, though the emphasis is overwhelmingly on practical application. You will be expected to demonstrate skills — not just define them. For example, it’s not enough to know the definition of “extinction”; you need to show how you would correctly implement an extinction procedure in a realistic scenario. Some tasks may also be assessed through a verbal interview component, where you explain your rationale or describe how you would handle a specific situation. Preparing to both do and articulate each skill will position you for success. 

  • Are there any hands-on or demonstration components to the Initial Competency Assessment?

    Yes — the majority of the assessment is performance-based. For most task items, you will be asked to demonstrate the skill through role-play or simulated scenarios rather than simply describing it.   • How far in advance do I need to schedule the assessment?

    We recommend scheduling your assessment at least 2 -3 weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and time, though we often have last-minute slots available for urgent needs. One important planning note: your completed Competency Assessment is valid for 90 days from the date of completion — after which it expires and cannot be submitted to the BACB. Schedule your assessment close enough to your planned BACB application submission date to ensure your paperwork remains valid. 

  • What are the typical turnaround times for receiving my assessment results?

    You will receive your results immediately at the conclusion of your session, there is no waiting period. If you have successfully demonstrated all required competencies, your assessor will sign the official BACB Competency Assessment form. We will process and deliver your completed, signed documentation to you within 24 hours along with your personalized study plan for preparing for your certification exam. You will then upload this signed form directly to your BACB Gateway account as part of your certification application. 

  • Can I reschedule or retake the Initial Competency Assessment if needed?

    Yes. If you do not demonstrate mastery in one or more task areas during your assessment, we will provide you with specific, actionable feedback and allow you to schedule a follow-up session focused on those areas. The BACB does not set a maximum number of ICA attempts. Please note that additional attempts may be subject to a fee; review our scheduling page or contact us for current retake pricing. Also be mindful that your completed assessment must be submitted to the BACB within 90 days of the assessment date, so plan your retake timeline accordingly to avoid expiration. 

  • What is the cost of the Initial Competency Assessment, and what does that fee include?

Exam Overview & Purpose

  • What are the major content domains covered on the RBT certification exam?

    The RBT certification exam is based on the RBT Test Content Outline, which took effect on January 1, 2026. The exam consists of 75 scored questions (plus 10 unscored pilot questions) across six content domains:

    • Data Collection and Graphing — 17% (13 questions)
    • Behavior Assessment — 11% (8 questions)
    • Behavior Acquisition — 25% (19 questions)
    • Behavior Reduction — 19% (14 questions)
    • Documentation and Reporting — 13% (10 questions)
    • Ethics — 15% (11 questions)

    When planning your study schedule, prioritize Behavior Acquisition (25%) and Behavior Reduction (19%), as they together make up nearly half of the exam. Ethics (15%) and Data Collection and Graphing (17%) are also heavily represented and should not be overlooked.

  • What is the RBT certification exam and what organization administers it?

    The RBT certification exam is the official, nationally recognized credentialing exam administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). It is a proctored, multiple-choice exam delivered through Pearson VUE testing centers (or via remote proctoring). Passing this exam earns you the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) credential, which is required by most ABA employers and insurance providers for you to deliver billable behavior-analytic services under supervision. 

  • Why is passing the RBT certification exam important for my career in ABA?

    The RBT credential is the industry standard for paraprofessionals delivering ABA services. Most ABA agencies and insurance providers require a valid RBT credential in order for services to be billable and reimbursable. Without it, you may be limited in the roles you can perform and the clients you can serve. Additionally, holding the RBT credential demonstrates that you have met a nationally recognized standard of competency, ethical conduct, and supervised experience. Note that the credential must be renewed every two years, and some states may have additional licensure or registration requirements — check your state’s regulations as well. 

  • How often is the RBT certification exam offered, and can I take it on a flexible schedule?

    The RBT certification exam is available year-round at Pearson VUE testing centers and via remote proctoring. Once your BACB application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email, which allows you to schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE location or online at your convenience. Be aware that your ATT has an expiration date — you must schedule and complete your exam before the ATT expires or you will need to reapply. Check your ATT carefully for the specific expiration window. 

  • What happens if I don’t pass the RBT certification exam on my first attempt?

    If you do not pass on your first attempt, you must wait a minimum of 7 days before schedulinga retake. Within your 12-month authorization period, you may attempt the exam up to 8 times total. Each retake requires a new Pearson VUE scheduling fee. If you exhaust all 8 attempts without passing, you will need to submit a completely new application to the BACB (including fees) to receive a new authorization period. Note that you will receive only a pass or fail result — the BACB does not provide a detailed breakdown of which content areas you missed, so thorough preparation before each attempt is essential. 

  • Is there a time limit for how long I have to pass the exam after completing my coursework?

    There are several timelines to be aware of:

    1. 40-Hour Training: Your completed training does not have a formal expiration date, but it must have been completed using a curriculum that meets current BACB standards at the time of your application. If BACB requirements change significantly, older training may need to be supplemented or retaken.
    2. Competency Assessment: Your completed ICA must be dated no more than 90 days before you submit your BACB application. If it expires, you will need to complete a new assessment.
    3. Authorization to Test (ATT): Once your application is approved, you will receive an ATT with a specific expiration date. You must complete the exam before the ATT expires. If it expires before you test, you must reapply.

    You have 90 minutes to complete the RBT certification exam.   • What percentage score do I need to pass the RBT certification exam?

    The RBT exam uses a scaled scoring system, meaning raw scores are mathematically adjusted to account for slight variations in difficulty across different exam versions. The passing score is 200 out of 250 on this scaled system — this does not directly translate to a percentage of questions answered correctly. The BACB does not provide a percentage score or tell you which questions you answered correctly. At the end of your testing appointment, the Pearson VUE center will provide a document indicating simply whether you passed or failed. During the exam, the software will also not indicate in real time whether your answers are correct or incorrect. 

  • Does the exam include scenario-based questions, or is it all multiple choice?

    All exam questions are in multiple-choice format, but many are written as clinical scenarios. Rather than asking you to define a term, these questions will describe a client situation — for example, a specific behavior or teaching moment — and ask you to identify the most appropriate response, intervention, or data collection method. These scenario-based questions are often the most challenging for candidates. Preparing by applying concepts to real-life situations (not just memorizing definitions) is the most effective study strategy for this question type.

    The RBT certification exam is based on the RBT Test Content Outline, which took effect on January 1, 2026. The exam consists of 75 scored questions (plus 10 unscored pilot questions) across six content domains:

    • Behavior Assessment — 11% (8 questions)
    • Behavior Acquisition — 25% (19 questions)
    • Behavior Reduction — 19% (14 questions)
