Applies To: All Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) who have completed their annual Recertification Competency Assessment and are ready to submit their renewal application to the BACB before their certification expires.
Congratulations on completing your RBT Renewal Competency Assessment! This guide is for RBTs renewing their certification in 2026 who have completed the required Recertification Competency Assessment with a BCBA. RBTs not currently practicing may want to explore Voluntary Inactive Status as an alternative, which pauses renewal requirements for up to two years and eliminates the need for supervision verification.
Since you’ve completed the assessment and your BCBA has provided your renewal packet, you’re ready to move into the formal application phase. Here’s exactly what you need to do next.
Note for Inactive RBTs: If you’re not currently practicing as an RBT, you have the option to apply for Voluntary Inactive Status instead of renewing. This option allows you to pause your renewal cycle for up to two years without renewal fees or supervision requirements. However, you cannot practice, bill, or represent yourself as an RBT while inactive. To return to active status later, you’ll need to complete a reentry competency assessment and pay a $25 processing fee. If you choose to remain active while not currently working, follow the renewal steps below with your supervising BCBA.
Immediate Next Steps #
1. Get the Assessment Documentation from Your BCBA #
Your BCBA should have completed the official assessment form documenting that you passed the Recertification Competency Assessment. This documentation is critical because it’s one of the primary components you’ll need for your renewal application. Make sure you receive the completed assessment results and keep them in a safe place.
2. Verify Your Supervision Records #
Before submitting your renewal application, ensure that your supervising BCBA can verify your compliance with ongoing supervision requirements (if applicable). You should have documentation showing you’ve received the required supervision hours throughout your certification period. Keep detailed supervision records in case of an audit.
3. Log into Your BACB Account #
Go to your BACB account and navigate to the renewal application section. Here you’ll access the RBT Renewal Application form to begin the formal submission process.
Completing Your Renewal Application #
Fill Out the Renewal Application Form Accurately #
Your renewal application will require you to provide the following information:
- Personal Details: Full name, current address, and contact information
- Employment History: Names of organizations where you’ve worked as an RBT, dates of employment, and hours worked
- Certification Number: Your current RBT certification number
Double-check all entries for accuracy before submission. Errors or missing information can delay your renewal.
Attach Required Documentation #
Include copies of any supporting documentation requested in your renewal packet. This typically includes supervision verification records and the assessment results your BCBA provided.
Submitting Your Application and Payment #
Pay the Renewal Fee #
The renewal fee for 2026 RBT recertification is $35. This fee must be paid when you submit your application. After payment, you can typically expect email confirmation of your renewal within approximately two weeks.
Submit Before Your Deadline #
Submit your renewal application well before your certification expiration date. The BACB recommends submitting at least 30 days before expiration, though 45 days in advance provides a comfortable buffer for processing. The earlier you submit, the less risk of any lapse in your certification status.
After Submission: What to Expect #
Once you’ve submitted your application and paid the fee, the BACB will review your submission in the order received. Monitor your email and BACB account for:
- Confirmation of successful submission (usually within 2 weeks)
- Any requests for additional information
- Final notification that your renewal has been approved
After you receive approval, log back into your BACB account to verify that your certification dates have been updated and check the BACB’s registry to confirm your renewal status.
Important 2026 Transition Information #
Since you’re renewing in 2026, this is your final annual renewal with a competency assessment. Here’s what comes next:
After Your 2026 Renewal #
Once you successfully recertify in 2026, your recertification cycle changes. Your next recertification won’t be due until 2028 (a two-year cycle instead of annual). Instead of another competency assessment, you’ll need to earn 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) across that two-year period.
You can begin accumulating PDUs toward your 2028 recertification immediately after your 2026 renewal is approved.
Timeline Checklist #
Use this timeline to stay on track:
| Action | Timeframe |
|---|---|
| Verify assessment documentation | Immediately after assessment completion |
| Confirm supervision records | Before application submission |
| Submit renewal application | 30-45 days before expiration |
| Receive BACB confirmation | Within 2 weeks of submission |
| Verify renewed certification | After approval confirmation |
If You Miss Your Deadline #
If you miss your certification expiration date, don’t panic; you have a 30-day grace period to submit your renewal application. However, you’ll be charged a $50 late fee in addition to your regular $35 renewal fee. If you submit more than 30 days after expiration, you’ll need to restart the entire certification process, including retaking the competency assessment.
Given that you’ve already completed your assessment and have your renewal packet from your BCBA, you’re well-positioned to complete this process smoothly. Focus on gathering all documentation, submitting your application promptly, and staying alert for any BACB communications requesting additional information.
