Domain A1–A4: Continuous, Discontinuous Measurement and Graphing #
Welcome to Domain A. Here you will learn how we collect data and read simple graphs. These skills guide our choices every day.
A1. Continuous Measurement #
Continuous measurement means we record each instance of the Behavior during observation. It is the most accurate, but it takes time and focus.
Main types
- Frequency (Count): How many times did the Behavior occur? Example: Johnny eloped 10 times.
- Duration: How long did the Behavior last? Example: A tantrum lasted 5 minutes.
- Latency: Time from the instruction (SD) to the start of the Behavior. Example: “Sit down” to sitting took 4 seconds.
- Interresponse Time (IRT): Time between one response and the next similar response. Example: 13 seconds between screams.
- Rate: Frequency divided by time. Example: 15 head bangs over 3 hours = 5 per hour.
Tip to decode questions
- “How many” points to frequency/count.
- “How long” points to duration, latency, or IRT.
A2. Discontinuous Measurement #
Discontinuous measurement samples only part of the session. Use it when rates are very high, resources are limited, or in group settings. It is useful, but less precise than continuous measurement.
Types and what they tend to show
- Partial-interval recording: Mark if the Behavior occurs at any time during the interval. Tends to overestimate occurrence for brief behaviors because a split-second counts for the whole interval.
- Whole-interval recording: Mark only if the Behavior lasts for the entire interval. Tends to underestimate, because 59 seconds in a 60-second interval would be scored as “no.”
- Momentary Time Sampling (MTS): Check only at the end of the interval. Often underestimates, but can over- or underestimate depending on timing.
Keep in mind: With interval methods, each interval gets only one score—yes or no.
A3. Permanent Product #
Permanent product records the result of Behavior, not the Behavior itself. You often do not need to observe the person.
When it works well
- Completed worksheets or test scores
- Number of puzzles built or items assembled
- Cleaned room or completed shopping list
When to avoid
- When the Behavior does not always leave a reliable trace (for example, some self-injury that leaves no consistent mark). In these cases, accuracy drops.
A4. Graphing Basics and Visual Analysis #
Do not overcomplicate graphing. Many systems graph data for you, but you should know the parts and how to read trends.
Graph parts
- Y-axis (ordinate): Behavior, the dependent variable.
- X-axis (abscissa): Time or sessions, the independent variable.
- Title: Describes what is shown.
- Condition change line: Shows when conditions shifted (for example, from Baseline to intervention).
Visual analysis essentials
- Trend: Is the data flat, increasing, or decreasing across points?
- Variability: How much do points bounce around from one to the next? High variability can signal inconsistent implementation or changing conditions.
Practice idea: Look at simple line graphs and label the trend between points and how variable the data are.
Quick Check #
- Can you match “how many” with frequency and “how long” with duration-type measures?
- Can you explain why partial-interval may overestimate and whole-interval may underestimate?
- Can you point to the dependent variable on a graph and describe the trend and variability?

Domain A5–A8: Definitions, Calculations, Trends, and Fidelity #
In this module, you will learn how to write clear Behavior definitions, do basic math with your data, read patterns on graphs, and protect data quality.
A5. Observable and Measurable Behavior #
Before you pick a measurement system, define the Behavior. It must be observable and measurable.
- Observable means you can see it. It is a public action, not a guess about thoughts or feelings.
- Measurable means you can count it or time it in a reliable way.
Write topography-based definitions. Say what it looks like.
- Weak: “Johnny was aggressive.” This could mean many things.
- Strong: “Johnny hit his brother five times with a closed fist.”
- Weak: “Client felt angry.”
- Strong: “Sarah threw three toys across the room in 10 minutes.”
Tips
- Include the topography (what you saw) and, if useful, note ABC facts to form a simple hypothesis. Do not guess the function without assessment.
- Stay objective. Use action words like hit, threw, bit, screamed, dropped, sat, said.
- Avoid labels and feelings unless reported quotes are relevant.
Reminder
Describe what you SEE, not what you THINK they feel.
A6. Calculate and Summarize Data #
Use simple math to turn raw data into quick summaries.
- Rate: frequency ÷ time.
- Example idea: 15 responses in 3 hours = 5 per hour.
- Tip: Keep time units clear (per minute, per hour, per session).
- Mean (average): total value ÷ number of data points.
- Works for frequency, duration, latency, IRT, etc.
- Percentage: correct (or occurrence) ÷ total opportunities × 100.
- Example idea: 8 correct out of 10 trials = 80%.
Study tip: Practice 1–2 problems of each type until it feels automatic.
A7. Identify Data Patterns (Trends and Stability) #
Know the four basic patterns and what they often suggest.
- Ascending (increasing): values go up over time.
- Good for desired behaviors. Not good for problem behaviors.
- Descending (decreasing): values go down over time.
- Good for reducing problem behaviors. Not good when you want growth.
- Stable (flat): little to no change across sessions.
- Typical in maintenance. Hard to change without adjustments.
- Variable (bouncy): up and down with no clear direction.
- Be careful. Do not make big decisions from highly variable data. Look for causes like inconsistent implementation or changing conditions.
A8. Fidelity and Data Integrity #
Fidelity means you implement the plan as written, the same way each time.
- Follow schedules, prompts, and procedures exactly (or as close as possible).
- Example: If the plan says FR5 for correct responses, reinforce after every fifth correct. Not after 3, then 6, then 9.
Why fidelity matters
- Consistent data across staff. If three RBTs do it three different ways, the data will not match.
- Sound decisions. Unreliable data can lead to the wrong treatment changes.
- You might add a reduction plan when Behavior did not truly increase.
- You might keep an ineffective plan because noise hid the real pattern.
- You might stop an effective plan by mistake.
- Client outcomes. Poor fidelity leads to inconsistent results, slower progress, or potential harm.
Your goal
Your fidelity has to be spot on.
Work with care, but remember perfection is hard. We work with people and busy settings. Aim to be precise and consistent.

Preference Assessments don’t identify reinforcers. They identify potential reinforcers.
Your primary role is to assist.
Always, always, always ask or get a training on a Functional Analysis if you don’t understand how they’re done.
Domain B covers how we find what clients like, how we check their skills, and how we learn why behaviors happen. As an RBT, you will use these tools often. Keep your actions within your scope and work with your supervisor.
B-01 Preference Assessments #
We use Preference Assessments to see what items or activities a client chooses. These show what might work as reinforcers later.
Key idea
- Liking is not the same as reinforcing. A preferred item may not increase Behavior until it is tested during teaching.
Types you should know
- Free Operant (child-led)
- Put out several items in the natural space. Do not prompt or arrange choices.
- Track time spent with each item or how often the client goes back to it.
- Good for quick, low-demand checks during sessions.
- Single-Stimulus (one at a time)
- Present one item. Note approach, interaction, or rejection.
- Useful for clients who struggle to choose between items.
- Paired-Stimulus (forced choice)
- Present two items at a time. Record which item is chosen.
- Rotate all pairs (A vs. B, A vs. C, B vs. C, etc.).
- Results create a simple ranking from most to least chosen.
- Multiple Stimulus With Replacement (MSW)
- Present an array (for example, A–D). Client picks one.
- Put the chosen item back, rearrange, and add or swap items.
- Track order and consistency of choices across trials.
- Multiple Stimulus Without Replacement (MSWO)
- Present an array (A–D). Client picks one.
- Remove the chosen item, rearrange the rest, then repeat.
- Continue until all items are chosen or the client stops. This yields a full rank order.
What to track
- Time with items (free operant)
- Approaches/interaction (single)
- Choice counts and rank order (paired, MSW, MSWO)
Quick tip for daily practice
- Do brief, casual preference checks each day. Interests change. Update your list often.
Potential vs. Actual Reinforcers #
- Preference assessment results are “potential reinforcers.” They are candidates.
- An item is a reinforcer only if it increases or maintains a target Behavior when delivered after that Behavior.
- If a preferred item does not change Behavior, it is not a reinforcer for that situation. Try another item or adjust timing, quality, or access.
B-02 Skill Assessments: RBT Role #
Your role in skill assessments is supportive. You help gather accurate information so the supervisor can plan teaching.
What you do
- Probe skills: Ask the client to try a task. Do not teach or prompt beyond the plan.
- Record data: Note correct/incorrect responses, independence, and any relevant context.
- Collect Baseline: Measure current performance before intervention.
- Assist with surveys or interviews as directed.
- Report clearly and promptly to your supervisor.
What you do not do
- You do not interpret results or make diagnostic or treatment decisions.
- You do not run assessments on your own without guidance.
Checklist: Parts of an Acquisition Plan you’ll see

B-03 Functional Assessment Basics #
We use a continuum of tools to learn the function of Behavior. Start broad, then get more precise.
- Indirect Assessments
- Interviews and questionnaires with people who know the client.
- Provide history and perspectives. Do not make final decisions from indirect data alone.
- Direct Assessments
- Observe the Behavior in real settings.
- Common task: ABC Recording.
- Antecedent: What happened right before.
- Behavior: What the client did (topography).
- Consequence: What happened right after.
- Look for patterns across time, settings, and people.
- Functional Analysis (FA)
- Systematically tests possible functions by changing antecedents and consequences.
- Example: Provide work, observe crying, then allow escape to test for escape function.
- Conducted by a qualified professional. RBTs may assist but do not run an FA alone.
Safety and scope notes
- Follow the plan exactly. Reinforcement and other consequences are arranged on purpose in an FA.
- Ask for training before helping with any FA procedures.
- If you feel unsure, pause and contact your supervisor.
ABC Recording: What to Watch For #
- Be specific and objective: “Teacher gave worksheet; Johnny threw it; teacher removed it.”
- Track what happens next time in the same situation. Do patterns repeat? If so, note them.
- During probes, ask the client to perform the task and record the response. Do not teach in the moment.
Quick Review #

Domain C1–C2: Reinforcement, Schedules, and Reinforcer Conditioning #
Reinforcement always, always, always increases Behavior.
The only type of continuous schedule is an FR1.
Present them at the same time if possible.
Welcome to Domain C1–C2. In this module, you will learn what Reinforcement is, how to deliver it well, how schedules work, and how to condition reinforcers. Keep your language simple and your timing tight. Small details matter here.
What Counts as Reinforcement #
Reinforcement is about Behavior change, not about what feels “good” or “bad.”
- If a Consequence makes a Behavior happen more in the future, it is Reinforcement.
- If the Behavior does not increase, it is not Reinforcement.
- Positive Reinforcement: you add something after the Behavior (example: child says “cookie,” gets a cookie).
- Negative Reinforcement: you remove something after the Behavior (example: child complies, demand is removed).
Key point: Both positive and negative Reinforcement increase future Behavior.
How to Deliver Reinforcement #
- Immediate: Deliver within 1–3 seconds when possible. This contiguity helps the learner connect the Behavior to the reward and prevents reinforcing the wrong response.
- Contingent: Use if–then rules. If the target Behavior occurs, then provide Reinforcement. Do not give it for free unless the plan calls for noncontingent delivery.
Why it matters: Waiting too long or reinforcing off-schedule can shape the wrong Behavior.
Reinforcement Schedules #
Schedules tell us when to provide Reinforcement. Know the words:
- Ratio = responses. Interval = time. Fixed = set amount. Variable = on average.
- Continuous schedule (FR1): reinforce every correct response. Use mainly for new skills or when strengthening a weak Behavior.
- Fixed Ratio (FR): reinforce after a set number of responses (example: FR3 = after every 3 responses).
- Variable Ratio (VR): reinforce after a changing number of responses around an average (example: VR5). This is usually the strongest schedule—the “slot machine” effect.
- Fixed Interval (FI): after a set time has passed, the first response is reinforced (example: FI 2 minutes).
- Variable Interval (VI): after a changing amount of time on average, the first response is reinforced (example: VI 3 minutes).
Tips
- Start with denser schedules (FR1 or small FR). Fade to leaner schedules (larger FR or VR) to build durable Behavior.
- Time-based schedules (FI/VI) can be harder for learners because access depends on time, not count of responses.
Magnitude and Intensity of Reinforcement #
- Magnitude means how big, long, or strong the reinforcer is (for example, 1 M&M vs 5 M&Ms; brief break vs longer break; quiet praise vs big, excited praise).
- Match magnitude to the schedule. Do not give large amounts on dense schedules, or you risk Satiation.
- Watch for intensity: Does the learner actually care about the reinforcer? Use current preference assessment results to guide choices.
Preventing Satiation
- Keep portions small when Reinforcement is frequent.
- Rotate options and vary delivery.
- Use strong social praise with other reinforcers to stretch value.
Conditioned and Generalized Reinforcers #
Definitions
- Unconditioned (primary) reinforcers: have value without learning (food, water, warmth, sleep, protection).
- Conditioned reinforcers: start neutral and gain value through Pairing with established reinforcers (tokens, praise, stickers).
- Generalized conditioned reinforcers: work across many settings because they link to many backup reinforcers (money; well-paired token systems).
Pairing procedures
- Repeatedly present the neutral stimulus with the established reinforcer.
- Best practice: present them together. Say “Good job” while giving the cookie. Over time, “Good job” becomes reinforcing on its own.
- Continue to pair praise with other reinforcers so that praise grows in strength.
Quick Examples #
- Positive Reinforcement: Child requests “cookie,” receives cookie; requests increase next time.
- Negative Reinforcement: Child cleans up; the clean-up demand ends; compliance increases in the future.
- FR1: Every correct response earns a token.
- VR5: On average, every 5 responses earn a small prize; responses stay high and steady.
- FI 2: After 2 minutes, the next correct response earns a break.
Common Mistakes to Avoid #
- Waiting too long to reinforce, which can strengthen the wrong Behavior.
- Giving large amounts on dense schedules, causing Satiation.
- Calling something a reinforcer when Behavior did not increase.
- Using interval schedules to teach new discrete responses when a ratio schedule would work better.
Practice Check #
- Explain how you know Reinforcement occurred using only Behavior change.
- Label each: FR3, VR4, FI 1 min, VI 2 min. Identify response vs time and fixed vs variable.
- Describe how you would pair praise with a preferred snack so that praise gains value.
You now know how to define, deliver, schedule, and condition Reinforcement. Use immediate, contingent delivery. Start dense, then thin with care. Pair praise often so it becomes a powerful, flexible reinforcer.
Domain C3–C4: DTT and Naturalistic Teaching (Incidental and NET) #

In this module, you will learn the flow of Discrete‑Trial Teaching (DTT) and how to teach in natural settings. Keep it simple, fast, and clear.
DTT: What It Is and Why It Works #
DTT teaches one small step at a time. It is structured and efficient. You can run many trials in a short time and get clean data. It is great for new skills.
Benefits
- Many trials in minutes
- Clear, easy data
- Systematic skill building
Common trial types
- Distractor: Mix one known target with unknown choices
- Random rotation: Alternate mastered and new targets to keep motivation up
- Maintenance: Run mastered skills now and then to check for regression
DTT Trial Sequence #
SD → prompt (as needed) → response → Consequence → brief pause → next trial
- SD: Give a clear instruction.
- Prompt: Use only if needed, and only before the response.
- Response: Learner acts.
- Consequence: Deliver Reinforcement for correct responses, or follow the plan for errors.
- Pause: Reset quickly, then move on.
Remember
- Prompt placement matters. Do not prompt after the response or after the Consequence.
- Keep a brisk pace. Short pauses keep momentum and attention.
- Specify Behavior in feedback. Say what occurred, then move on.

DTT Data and Checks #
- Record each trial: correct, incorrect, prompted, or no response.
- Note prompt level when used.
- Mix in maintenance trials to ensure old skills stay strong.
- Use trial counts and percentages to guide next steps.
Naturalistic Teaching: Incidental and NET #
Naturalistic teaching happens in real life spaces with real outcomes. It is child‑led and less structured. You use natural Reinforcement and everyday routines.
Key features
- Natural settings: home, backyard, store, restaurant
- Natural reinforcers: the toy, the snack, the break
- Child‑led exploration; you follow their interests
- Teaching woven into play and routines
Incidental Teaching (IT) #
Wait for interest, then create a chance to teach.
Example flow
- Child shows interest (reaches for a high toy).
- You prompt a functional response (say “Help”).
- Deliver the item as the reinforcer.
- Over time, the request “Help” should increase.
Natural Environment Teaching (NET) #
Still natural, but a bit more planned. You embed instruction across the day.
Examples
- During snack: “What color is your apple? What color is your plate?”
- During play: “The car is under the table” to teach prepositions.
- On outings: Practice safety, attention, waiting, and social skills.
Why it’s useful
- Easy Generalization to real life
- Great for social interaction, safety, and accessing items
- Fun, creative, and good for rapport
When to Use DTT vs. NET #
Use DTT when
- Teaching a brand‑new skill
- You need many quick trials
- You want tight control and clear data
Use NET/Incidental when
- You can teach during daily routines
- You want natural Reinforcement and Generalization
- You are targeting social, safety, or community skills
Practical note: DTT is hard in busy public places like a grocery store. NET fits better there.

- Decide which method you would use to teach a new label vs. practice safety in a store.

Domain C5: Task Analysis and Chaining Methods #

Task Analysis and Chaining help us teach complex daily skills. We break one big skill into small, clear steps. Then we choose a teaching method that fits the learner.
Task Analysis: How We Build the Chain #
- First, analyze the skill. Watch yourself or a skilled person do it.
- Write the steps in order. Keep each step short and observable.
- The number of steps depends on the learner. There is no set length.
- Once steps are set, you have a chain to teach.
Example: Handwashing (example steps)
- Turn on water
- Wet hands
- Apply soap
- Rub hands
- Rinse
- Turn off water
- Dry hands
Key idea
- The Task Analysis creates the chain. Do the analysis first, then teach.
Choosing a Chaining Method #
Pick the method based on learner needs and where success is most likely.
Forward Chaining #
- Teach the first step to independence, prompt the rest.
- Then teach steps 1–2 to independence, prompt the rest.
- Continue adding one new independent step at a time.
- What gets reinforced: completing the current independent steps.
- Use when starting at the beginning makes sense and momentum builds well.
Backward Chaining #
- Prompt through the chain, then teach the last step first.
- Learner finishes the task and contacts Reinforcement at the end each time.
- Helpful if the learner has trouble starting or often escapes tasks.
- Then move backward: teach last two steps, then last three, and so on.
- Benefit: sessions end with success and completion.
Total-Task Presentation #
- Teach all steps in every trial.
- Prompt anywhere support is needed, then fade prompts.
- Good when most steps are already strong or the learner picks up quickly.
Task Chain Interruption Strategy #
Use this after the chain is mastered to build flexibility and problem solving.
- Briefly disrupt the routine to evoke new responses.
- Example: move the soap to a new spot during handwashing.
- Goal: teach the learner to adapt when things change in real life.
Quick Guide: When to Use What #
- Forward: best for steady, step-by-step growth from the start.
- Backward: best when ending with success boosts motivation or escape is likely.
- Total-task: best when only a few steps need work or the learner learns fast.
- Interruption: best after mastery to promote flexibility.
RBT Tips #
- Keep steps clear, short, and observable.
- Reinforce according to the method you’re using.
- Prompt only as needed and fade quickly.
- Track which steps are independent, prompted, or error.
- Adjust the number of steps if the learner needs more or fewer.
You now know how to build a chain with Task Analysis and how to teach it using forward, backward, or total-task methods. Use chain interruption after mastery to grow flexibility and real-world independence.
Domain C6–C7: Discrimination Training, Prompts, and Fading #
Client touches circle. I reinforce. This becomes the SD.
The prompt is an Antecedent.
We want to fade prompts because we don’t want prompt dependencies.
Welcome to C6–C7. In this lesson, you will learn how to teach discrimination, how to prompt well, and how to fade prompts so independence grows.
Discrimination Training (C6) #
Goal: Teach the client to respond differently to different stimuli using differential Reinforcement.
How it works
- Present an SD (discriminative stimulus). Example: “Touch circle.”
- Reinforce the correct response to the SD.
- Withhold Reinforcement for incorrect responses. These are S-delta (SΔ) trials. They signal that Reinforcement is not available for that response.
Simple example
- SD: “Touch red.” Display red and green cards.
- Response: Touch red → reinforce.
- Response: Touch green → no Reinforcement (Extinction for that trial).
- Over time, the learner contacts more Reinforcement for the correct option and learns to discriminate.
Key points
- SD signals Reinforcement is available for a specific response.
- S-delta signals Reinforcement is not available for other responses at that moment.
- Keep procedures clear and consistent so the signal stays strong.
Prompts and Prompt Hierarchies (C7) #
Prompts help the learner respond correctly. A prompt is an Antecedent. It comes before the response and acts like a temporary SD.
Common prompt types (from most to least intrusive, adjusted per learner)
- Physical guidance
- Model (you demonstrate)
- Gesture (point, motion)
- Positional (place item closer or in a clear spot)
- Verbal (tell, hint)
Prompting strategies
- Most-to-least (often used for Errorless Learning): start with strong support to prevent errors, then reduce the level.
- Least-to-most: start with minimal help, then increase only if needed.
- Errorless Learning means you prompt enough to avoid errors during teaching.
Placement rule
- Give the prompt right after the SD and before the learner’s response. Do not prompt after the response or after the Consequence.
Fading Prompts #
Why fade
- Prompts are temporary signals. If they stay, the learner may depend on them.
How to fade
- Gradually reduce prompt intensity: physical → model → gesture → positional → verbal → independent.

Multiple relationships to avoid
- Friendships, dating, or romantic ties with clients or caregivers
- Business deals, buying or selling goods at sessions
- Babysitting or socializing outside of services without approval
- Handling money or making financial arrangements yourself
